Description
The 940 has been in the Benchmade catalog since 2001 and has barely changed, because it did not need to. Warren Osborne drew a knife that looks like a gentleman's folder and works like a hard-use tool. The reverse tanto puts mass behind the tip where most folders are weakest, while the flat grind and long belly keep it a genuinely good slicer.
Every model here shares the same frame: 7.87 inches open, 4.47 inches closed, a 3.4 inch blade at 0.115 inch stock. The differences are steel, handle material and finish. The green aluminum 940 is the original and the one most people picture. The 940-2 swaps to black G10 and sheds a quarter ounce. The Burnt Copper build moves up to MagnaCut, and the seasonal Taiga Green runs S90V with a battlewashed FDE blade.

Common Questions
Why a reverse tanto?
It moves steel to the tip rather than away from it. You get a point that survives prying and scraping, with a long uninterrupted cutting edge behind it. The trade is that it is less suited to fine piercing than a needle-point blade.
940 or 940-2?
The 940 is the icon, with green anodized aluminum and purple anodized standoffs. The 940-2 is black G10, a quarter ounce lighter, slightly thicker in the handle, and less expensive. Same blade, same lock.
What is MagnaCut?
A newer powder steel designed to give high edge retention and high toughness without sacrificing corrosion resistance, which older steels usually trade against each other. It is on the 940BK-03 build.
